December 23 and 24 of the lunar calendar are the traditional Chinese festival, also known as "Xiao Nian."
“Xiaonian” is not specifically a festival day. The festival can be different due to different local customs. During the festival, the main celebrate activities include post Spring Festival couplets, sweeping dust, and scarify “Zao shen”, who is one of Chinese god.
Xiaonian has different concepts and dates in different places. The northern region is Twenty-three in the twelfth lunar month, and the southern region is Twenty-four in the twelfth lunar month. Generally in Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai regions, people refer both the "Twenty-four of Twelve Lunar month" and "the night before New Year's Eve" as the “Xiaonian”.
In Nanjing, it is said that the Lantern Festival on the 15th of the first lumar month is “Xiaonian”, and part of Yunnan “Xiaonian” is the first lunar month of the 16th, and the minority areas in the southwest and the north region are New Year's Eve.
After “Xiaonian” people are going to prepare goods for the New Year, it indicate that the New Year has a new atmosphere, which is kind of good wishes for retiring the old and welcoming the new.
