UK authorizes hydraulic fracturing test for Yorkshire shale gas exploration

The Yorkshire in north UK authorized hydraulic fracturing test for shale gas exploration lately in spite of protest from thousands of residents. They worry a lot about the catastrophic earthquake, health problems and pollution which might be caused by the exploration operation. It is the first time that UK allows this type of exploration in five years.

In 2011, the UK ever conducted the hydraulic fracturing test in Fylde coast once. However, the small earthquake happened after was suspected caused by it.

Hydraulic fracturing test means the chemical fluid under the pressure injects to deep underground to split the rock and release shale gas. The protesters think it will cause the water pollution, earthquake, noise, traffic pollution and so on. The environmentalists warn that it is better to control climate change than chasing the fossil fuel energy.

The government supported the plan in the earlier this month. British Prime Minister Cameron and the home secretary also showed their support to the progress. In 2014, Cameron said the government would go all out produce shale gas in order to promote energy security and national economy.

Peter Sowray, a member of Executive Management Committee, says:” People will be angry, and they need time to calm down, perhaps some people never calm down.” Activists warned that the plan will lead to thousands of hydraulic fracturing wells in Yorkshire and throughout the country.

Although hydraulic fracturing activity caused fierce opposition, it owes the government’s strong support. How big will the conflict between the protesters and the government evolve to in the end? And how the hydraulic fracturing will continue to develop in UK? The event is worth of our continuing attention.
